  Retinal Health Screening

Health of the Back of your Eyes

Retinal Health Screening (RHS) is a test that is included in every Standard Eye Examination at IGARD.

It involves a full screening of the back of your eyes (the retina) for potential problems that can have very serious impact on your visual health.

The retina is a very sensitive part of the eye -- it is somewhat similar to the film you have in your traditional camera.

It is responsible for your good vision -- as soon as light enters the eye, it is captured by light-sensitive photoreceptors in the retina.

Any abnormality on the retina can have a significant impact on your vision, although sometimes you might not realise it in its early stages.

Some retinal health conditions include diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and glaucoma

Retinal imaging can also sometimes detect vascular abnormalities. This is because the retina is supplied with blood vessels that can be distinctly seen on our non-mydriatic retinal imaging and ophthalmoscopy.

Indeed, this is the only part of the human body where blood vessels can be seen in its entirety!

Technology in Retinal Health

"Subtle changes in the eye's retinal vessels can give warnings as to whether the patient may be heading towards a stroke. Computers can help to trace and track these vessels accurately..."  More Information (Links to Website of National University of Singapore)

IGARD employs several technologies for examining Retinal Health.

Technologies available to patients include:

  • Ophthalmoscopy - For screening the back of the eyes for abnormalities, included in retinal health screening.

  • Non-mydriatic Digital Retinal Imaging (Eye drops NOT required!) - One of the most advanced screening tool for a quick snapshot of the general health in the retina, included in retinal health screening.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) - One of the most modern diagnostic tool for cross-sectional examination of the retina under high-powered microscope which also differentiate the different layers of the retina with the measurement of its thickness.
