Hyperopia is a true state of farsightedness (i.e. opposite to being shortsighted). It can occur at any age as it is a refractive condition where near-vision is affected, whilst vision in the far distance may (or may not) be affected, depending on its severity.
Another commonly known type of farsightedness is Presbyopia. This occurs in middle-aged adults (around 40 years old) as focusing ability of the eye’s ‘natural lens’ become less flexible due to changes in its protein composition with age. It generally does not affect vision in the far distance.
The ‘natural lens’ can no longer refract light adequately to focus on near objects, people who are already wearing spectacles may need bifocal, multifocal or progressive lenses, whilst those who have never worn spectacles may require reading glasses.
